David, I love it how you put things so simply and eloquently, great tips on language!

This quote is perfect!

Hi David,

It can be a real minefield trying to recruit good staff. Learning to really listen to people's language is soooo.. important, isn't it?

Cheers,

Good article David,

Just wondering how the business owner you described rationalised his decison to go with looks over substance. Good example of the little head doing the thinking for the big head :)

Just shows that being as objective as possible is crucial.

Great article David,

It's typical of us men, thinking that it's women that are the emotional ones and here we are getting caught up in basing these sorts of decisions on emotion, dumb and dumber.

Having a clear cut system top follow is excellent, certainly takes the 'emotion' out of the process, well done.

David, good article to remind business owners they are not looking for friends but quality staff members. There needs to be a clear distinction between the two.

Hello James

Thankyou for your comment. Firstly I like the story because I can just see these two English tradesmen with singed eyebrows and hair being called back to a house they had burnt down thinking this is it they are in big trouble now. Secondly we often make assumptions without getting more information to support those assumptions. Let me give you an example, I coach business owners and managers who assume that they are naturally good managers because they own the business. However if they had undertaken a psychometric test that revealed the areas they need more "knowlewdge, training and mentorship in" then their businesses and personal lives would be in a far healthier state. For many business owners and managers the one dimensional unspoken belief is, if I am the owner or manager most of the training and coaching should be focused on the staff, this is a manager myth. The pilot of the ship steers the boat, without a complete picture of the situation he will run the ship a ground and that's what happens to many business owners and managers, they neglect to get the full picture and that's precisely why they need coach - to obtain a multi dimensional view.

Hi David, just goes to show how generalised assumptions like "If I buy it from a shop it must be ok" can be catastrophically incorrect. The trouble is, most of us have some unspoken one dimensional beliefs that limit us in some way and we aren't aware of them until they bite us on the backside.

Hello Dr G

I actually did respond to your e-mail but the e-mails bounced back twice.
I didn't post your comments because I was concerned about the e-mails bouncing back and the validity of your identity.

Since then I have been on holiday the first time in four years.
My original e-mail to you thanked you for your comments and explained that although I have used numerous tests and online assessments the reason why I use the Harrison Assessments for pre employment screening is that they work!

I am happy to learn about better tests and assessments from you or anyone else for that matter.
However currently for the purpose of pre employment I find the Harrison test very useful.

I look forward to working with you to identify the best pre employment tool on the market.

All the best

David
P.S I have just found the e-mail I sent to you on Wed 7/01/2009 8:38 AM
Hello Dr G
Thank you for your comments and very interesting.
I recommend Dan’s assessments for pre screening employees because they have been extremely useful to collect the information I require, however I am open to use any other tests that you recommend.
I am always keen to learn more effective ways to undertake my work.
98% predictive is absurd I agree, at best they are 30% predictive.
Please feel free to link me to information that can improve my knowledge here.

Have a good day.
